This is the time of the year alot of people will buy a new scope and blow alot of money and ammo trying to sight a new scope.
My way will let you fire 2 shots and get it in the bullseye.
First we will be talking about a bolt action rifle or any rifle that you can see thru the bore..
This is done at a distance of 25 yards
The first thing you will need is one of those mounts that you can lay your rifle in because you can not hold it still enough even with sandbags..I;m to cheap to spend alot of money on one so I looked in a catalog and made mine out of wood.I made sure and went a little extra and put felcro straps to hold front of gun down and felcro straps on butt.Best thing I ever did.Took the recoil completly away..
OK now you have the rifle down tight so take the bolt out look thru the barrel and move the rifle till you see your target paper bullseye. This is what they call boresighting .Personally I use a white paper plate and draw a bulleye in it.--Now that you see the target peek up and see where the scope is looking.
Very carefully adjust the cross hairs until it looks on target.
Now if you have done it right you can fire your first shot and it should at least hit the paper plate or whatever you choose.
OK the first shot barely hits the paper lets say 6 inches high and 4 inches right.
Whoa you say not even close...don;t worry you are fine.
Now again put those cross hairs exactly where you had them the first shot.
Do you see where the first shot hit ---I am sure you do.
Now very carefully without touching the rifle crank those adjustments up to where the shot hit and then over to dead on that bullet hole
If you did it right- then now aim the rifle for the bullseye and shoot your second shot and you will be right on the bullseye or very close.Look how much ammo is saved. Now maybe 1 or2 shots to fine tune it. That gismo that holds your rifle is the key to a really straight shootin gun..
You may want to get a big piece of cardboard to put your target on and even if you miss it by a foot as long as you can see the bullet hole this will still work.
Now I will say it again .You want to do this at a distance of 25 yards. This will put most high powered rifles 1 inch high at 100 yards..

September the month of change
I think of all the months in the year September has the biggest change of all..The walnut trees start losing their leaves. The gardens are just about worn out..My Grey foxes have their gorgeous winter coats and their puppies are so big I have a hard time telling them apart from their parents and I can hardly keep up with the feed..This years fawns have lost their spots with the exception of a very old doe who had 4 fawns the first week of August (unbelievable).I hope they get big enough before the cold weather comes..and my favorite time-the bucks have all rubbed their antlers clean and the rut is on.Now like every year my local bucks will disappear and when it comes time for me to find one I will probably shoot one I have never seen before. After the slaughter 2 and 3 years ago it will take awhile to get things back if ever..The game cameras have only shown 2 nice bucks but it was a night time picture.Never seen them in the daylight..The interesting part is I have relatives and friends in New York-Idaho and Washington and the bucks there have also rubbed.Kind of destroys the bullshit I have read about the bucks down south like here shed later..I also have a friend in Alaska but she will not set foot in the woods so I have asked her to contact someone to see if they rubbed there too.
Now about 10 years ago I had friend in Texas and he said when I called the deer had also rubbed so what can I say.
Now do not tell anyone especially the MDC that again the peak of the rut will be the week of the full moon in October..
Now I know alot of guys and a few gals are putting on new scopes or sighting in the old one so I will tell you next time how to sight your scope in 2 shots to hit the target guaranteed..

4 fawns holy smoke
We have all heard the saying "I thought I saw everything" So when I say it again it will not be some thing new.I have the unique situation on my place of being able to watch generations of deer come to eat and graze..I know who they are and how old they are because they have been coming for years..
I can tell one from the other because of the scars they have from barb wire fences..Things have been weird for my does.My grandma doe as I call her had NO fawns this year and her doe from 2 years ago also did not have a fawn, but grandma doe from last years still comes up with her buck fawn from last year.Has a weird rack. Big and twice as long on one side with 3 small points and just a short spike on the other. Now his great -great grandma still comes up,but this year I figured it might be her last from the way she looked.
She had no fawns this spring either .I could see she also had no udder with milk so it was not a case of her losing her fawn and all summer she just kept getting fatter.Never seen a deer that big.I figured she had cancer of some sort.About the last wek in July she no longer came up with her grand kids to visit and the wife and I figured time had run its course..
Then the end of the first week in August to our amazement we see another deer come up with the regulars and its Her and she is a lot slimmer and to my unbelief she has a huge udder. The old gal had a fawn somewhere ands its the middle of AUGUST which means she was bred in January..
Its gets better.I was out a few days ago working on my blinds when a deer jumps up runs a few feet and stops. She does not move until I do so I figure shes hiding a fawn.I get a good look and it is great-great grandma and when I look where she was I get the suprise you can not believe.I see 1 head 2 heads 3 heads 4 heads holy smoke---4 fawns, first time I ever saw that.Hope they get thru the winter.

Its not the MDC fault
Once again the Missouri department of communists are trying to blame someone for something so they can come in and take complete control of Private property..
You must remember that they are a parasite organization that feeds off the public. In reality they do nothing for the wildlife. It is done and financed totally by you and me.They are supposed to be OUR employees not our bosses. We pay them, but yet they sell licenses to people to hunt on our land.
Their goal is somewhat aligned like the churches where the priests make you think everything you have comes from some god not from your own hard work so the MDC would have you believe that without them there would be no game or fish.To that I say bullshit.
Once again they are trying to shut down these people who have game hunting preserves by saying they are bringing in disease. Now maybe you and me do not like this type of hunting but that is our CHOICE and hopefully we can still keep it in this once great country. We do not need any more freedoms taken away..I have to believe strongly that people who have invested money and time into building this business would make dam sure they keep their animals healthy.
One thing I have observed over the years in many states I have lived is that when cattle are brought in the wildlife population and natural vegetation go to hell in a hurry, but nothing is hardly ever done because money talks loudly if you get my drift..

Common Sense Required
Finally peace and quiet -the moron snaggers have gone. Now all us locals have to do is try and clean up the bottles cans and other rubbish.
I originally started this blog because my knowledge of the crap that goes on in these state Game departments is better than most. They are probably the biggest abusers of private property rights in this country and people are just letting them fly under the radar unchallenged.
There is one thing for sure I know--the word conservation should be dropped from their title. Its pure bullshit made to elicit that they give a dam about the wildlife.Time after time they have been given property to remain in a natural state as one of the conditions and they go in and log etc.
The agents look like a bunch of big kids with their Pickups,boats,4 wheelers and other stuff paid by taxpayers just so they can go to a boat launch and give tickets..Speaking of which -they will give you a ticket if you drive through a stream bed. I do not think it is right either unless you are a property owner and just want to get to another spot on your place..
I originally started this blog because of what I saw and continue to see.
When I came here the little north fork of the white river by Thornfield it was a gorgeous little place to fish. The river was only 10 to 20 feet wide at most under normal conditions and 2 feet to 6 feet deep in pools and the water was cold enough for a few trout and small mouth bass and lots of big green sunfish eager to bite and the bank was lined with 150 year old trees keeping it shady and cool..
Then the county and a out of town concrete company moved in with bulldozers, front end loaders and dump trucks right in the river. Now it is bulldozed up to 150 feet wide ,the trees are long gone and you can not find any fish, minnows ,frogs etc.It is that way for miles. In a few weeks it will completly dry up in spots. That never happened before. It has destroyed all fishing all the way down to Bull shoal lake. Now because its so flat and wide its become a heat sink. The water that does make it through is so hot nothing can live in it and all these years the MDC has done nothing.
Hey whatever happened to it being against the law for driving thru a stream bed?????
As I sit here now there is a truck and huge front end loader in the middle of the river scooping up the gravel.
Its clear to me that the MDC has only one goal and that is the money in your pocket and the complete takeover of private property..
I would like the power to give these MDC employees MY common sense test.I believe 75% would flunk the test.

Missouri Moron day
They ought to create a moron day in Missouri on the opening of snagging season. What I have seen these guys do most people would call me a liar and say I make it up..I am not that creative..
There is a place called Haskins ford .It crosses the little North fork of the white river. It is a main paved road, but if these guys see suckers they will go nuts and block it off while casting that big heavy hook. One time I was very slowly going accross and even blew my horn because because these knuckheads were in the road.Just as I go by he rears back and whacks my antenna.I yell at him and he gives me a dirty look and says-well get out of the way can;t you see I,m casting.Nuts pure nuts standing in the road and he acts like I,m the one that should not be there..
The worst incident I have ever seen was again the same spot but I was the 3rd car back. Two guys had the road blocked and had snagged fish jerked them out of the water and threw them on the road and again casted. The lady in front blew her horn and one of these guys reached inside his jacket and pulled out a pistol and pointed at the woman who put her car in reverse and ran into the guy in front of me.When I and the other guy got out I said did you see that nut point a knife at that woman. The guy said that was a pistol not a knife..Hard to believe people freak out like that..
The funniest I saw was last year when I was with a friend going to town. These guys had a pickup truck with an enormously long metal platform that must have hung out 10 feet past the end of the truck and it was as wide as the bed. They had backed it down to where the rear wheels were almost in the water and two of them were on the back casting. Then the 3rd guy climbed up and as soon as his weight went to the back the front of the truck went slowly in the air turned sideways and ended up in the river on its side and everyone in the water.Guess they never heard of leverage. There were plenty of others there and by the time we came back they had been pulled out..
Then the guy I was with stops on the road and says to 2guys cleaning the fish and throwing guts all over. You know what your doing is illegal and I see you have some walleye.Guy laughs and says thats why we are doing this. The MDC agent is too stupid to tell the difference in the fillets. Then my friend says to them-I bet he isn;t stupid enough to clean them in water that 10,000 cows have shit and pissed in and took off in a hurry cause they looked mad....

How old was your deer ??
I came across some old pictures I was looking for and found some very interesting facts on the ages of deer killed. This goes all the way back to the years of 1987 and 1988.At that time I was doing some volunteer work for the Washington state game department..It was the first time they tried the new method of ageing a deer by cutting across one of the incisor teeth to check for age.I was also fortunate enough to draw special permits and was sucessful in getting what I was after.
There are only 2 states with all the main species of deer so you had better know what you are shooting at. My deer a whitetail and a mulie were both 2.5 years old,but I had access to all the information so I thought you might be interested and I am certain it will change your way of looking at a deer and guessing how old it is..We will just deal with the oldest deer in each class.
IN 1987---
Columbia blacktail deer--- Doe-17.5 years----------Buck-15 Years
Mule deer------------------- Doe-19.5 years----------Buck-12.5 Years
Whitetail deer-------------- Doe-18 years ---------Buck-13.5 Years
Elk--------------------------- Cow-26 years----------Bull-18.5 Years
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IN 1988---
Columbia blacktail deer-- Doe-20.5 years-----------Buck-12.5 years
Whitetail deer-------------------Doe-18.5 years----------Buck-16 years
Mule deer----------------------Doe-18 years--------------Buck-10.5 years
Elk-------------------------------Cow-25.5 years----------Bull-17 years
All these animals were killed fair chase and most in the National forests so you see they can live quite awhile if they are smart and lucky.. This information was taken from several thousand deer not just a few..
I also have figures on bear, moose, sheep, goats for the same things..
Just think about it,some of these animals can have great-great-great---OH HELL man lots of great grandkids in the woods.

Armadillos must hibernate
Winter has finally turned the corner I hope.
My critters all seem to have come thru in good shape.Deer have no signs of being starved .Turkeys as always seem to make it thru and I am still always amazed how those big birds can sit up in those little branches all night in rain- snow -ice -and howling winds..
My pair of Gray-fox are now showing up in the daytime which usually means Momma is pregnate.
Poppa fox is about 8 years old now and one of the few people who have seen them here have asked
"how the hell can you tell if its them? Simple I respond-they are marked. Poppa has notch in top of his right ear and Momma has a scar by her nose.Hard to see when they have their winter coats..
As usual I can not wait to see how many pups they bring up.I know since they have been hanging around I have very few problems with mice in the barns and thats great because I have some collector cars.
One critter I am not happy to see that made it thru the winter is those dam armadillos. Both of us here have had serious injurys from stepping in one of those holes that are covered by leaves so we get rid of as many as possible. In the last few days since the snow has gone off the side of the county roads we have seen 7 just walking--the most ever .
What pisses me off is the articles I have seen written by the MDC and other game departments is information about Armadillos that has to be pure "bullshit"such as.
Armadillos must eat every day because they can not store fat..
Heres another one-Armadillos can not survive temperatures below freezing for more than a few days.
Well guess what MDC and the rest of you so called experts-no one told the Armadillos that.
All I can tell you is that these Armadillos have found a way to hibernate or they would not be here.
especially after one of the snowiest and cold winters I have seen..
Last hunting season I marked a tree with a ribbon where an Armadillo had dug under.I watched that tree all winter and not once did that critter come out, How do I know? There was snow and ice on that hole for 2 months unbroken..but he finally came out a week ago.for his last
time.It seems there is nobody at the MDC with common sense.
Armadillos are here and have evolved. They do not run up here from Texas Over night--GET IT

The good and bad of 2013 season
Well the good part of my season was when I kept checking where they slaughtered all those deer the last 2 years I did not find one dead deer only the skinned hide of a fawn hanging on a fence. There were plenty hunters camped out but they left the area the cleanest I heve ever seen it.I also did not have to chase one person off my property, but then I could not hunt my 20 acres next to my neighbor because according to the MDC it is illegal to hunt an AREA that has been baited.Well the neighbor does not bait- he does not hunt -he just likes to feed the critters, but since my property is an AREA according to the MDC its illegal to hunt. The neighbor on the otherside of him who has 300 acres in his AREA hunted anyway.I tried to show him the law but he said "get away you crazy old bastard".
Can you imagine that.I have this crazy idea I wish the Fabulous MDC- know it all-would do.PUT SOME FEET TO THE SIZE OF AN AREA YOU MORONS.
As to my hunting it was rough and I had a few doctor bills, but you have to obey the MDC law.
Do you know how hard it is for an old guy like me to lasso a spike buck and hold it down so I can measure to see if it had 3 inch spikes. The second one I did it got me a trip to the doctor and 20 stiches.Thats it for me.Now I am only going to shoot forked horns..
Now I have to figure out my next problem..POACHERS..Me and my neighbor have talked to the MDC agent and told him about these guys that are using dogs to take my game.
The agent said you can not stop the dogs if they are chasing critters on your place because they can not read signs ,but get the name off their collar and they will do something..We think he was just "shinin"us on. We tried chasing them with pickup-no luck.with a 4 wheeler-no luck.Held a steak on the end of a stick and whistled here fido-again no luck.
We finally figured out how to get the name off the collar.
